rudimentarylabia:

We are a traumatized species. Foucault said that modern society is, in itself, perverse. Freud said that perverse impulses were the result of unresolved psychological pain. That pain fragments the self and initiates the death instinct. If society is perverse, then society is collectively pursuing its death instinct. Perversity is anything that deters us from the acquisition of life or advancement of the species. If trauma perverts man, and modern man is perverse, will trauma become the ideal environment for our species? Traumatic incidences reduce hippocampal volume. Repeated trauma is brain damage. Human evolution is at a stalemate. Will the death instinct evolve? Will we find a way to transform death into life? Or have we been gradually and unwittingly orchestrating our demise? We are a traumatized species.

1. We are a traumatised species because humanity has ideals and society’s perverse.

2. Yes, because the death instinct is powered by the perversity of modern society, and the latter will evolve. However, the evolution will not be an adaption of inheritable physical traits, but of inheritable mental traits. The death instinct despises the natural as modern society idolises the artificial.

3. Yes. Humanity is reflected in a culture’s super-personal rites of transforming death into life, eg. creation. Any human has the power to create, as a species we have created life. We are transforming death into life with every breath.

4. Yes and no, we adapt a death instinct because we are a traumatised species.
